About the NGVFA

The Association was initially set up in 1996 and sadly some of its founder members have since died from the illnesses resulting from service in the Gulf.

When the Association was initially set up there was a provision put into the governing documents for any future conflicts in the Gulf that these service personnel and family members would be covered by the Association.

What we never expected back then was Gulf War 2.

To date we have over 2,500 members from Gulf War 1990-91 and several (and increasing) from Gulf War 2. We have sadly seen 2 suicides.

Our Association's main interest is to try and help members on their day to day lives and provide them with enough help and information that can possibly make a difference.

The Association became a registered charity in 1999, just after the offices were set up in Hull.

The objects for which the charity is established are:

  • The relief of persons who served as members of the Armed Forces or as civilians in the conflict in the Gulf and their families and dependants who are in conditions of need, hardship, sickness or distress.
  • The relief of any persons who serve as members of the Armed Forces or as civilians in any future desert conflict and their families and dependants who are in conditions of need, hardship, sickness or distress.

Our aims for achieving our governing objectives shall be to provide immediate and ongoing support to those persons who are, or have been, suffering medical or psychiatric disorders since their service in the Persian Gulf Conflict, to secure and enhance their quality of life and assist in prevention or repeat events. To provide a forum in which to nurture continuing companionship and friendship to veterans, families and friends. For the purpose of carrying out the above aims, but not otherwise, the Association shall have the following powers:-

  • To educate the public and all relevant professional agencies about members suffering from any medical or psychiatric illness, who have served or are still serving in the Armed Forces and to mobilise, encourage, foster and maintain the interest and support of the public and those professional agencies.
  • To foster co-operation and inter-communication between other associations involved in the field.
  • To give and exchange information and advice and to promote education in all matters relating to medical and mental health complaints related to their service to promote research and to disseminate the results.
  • To publish, or contribute to the publication of any papers, periodicals, books, reports or other documents.
  • To hold conferences, meetings, lectures and exhibitions.
  • To encourage members of the Association to participate in training and education in the furtherance of much improved understanding into these conditions.
  • To do all such things as are necessary for the attainment of the above aims.
