Library - Reports, Articles & Papers
Overview by Dr Nigel Graveston, Chairman, NGV&FA, 2004
So far we have catalogued over 80 items in our archive. Some of these published items are of considerable significance while others are considerably less so. Some items are fairly easy to read for the layperson and non-technical reader. However, some are considerably more difficult due to their content of highly specialised material, particularly in the fields of physics, biochemistry, molecular biology and mathematical statistics. There are differences between reports, articles and papers.
Reports: These tend to be collections of information produced for a specific purpose, e.g. briefing a committee.
Articles: These are probably the easiest to read. They tend to be more of a general and less formal presentation of a topic.
Scientific Papers: These are original research papers or review articles published in scientific journals. These are "peer reviewed", which requires all the i's dotted and the t's crossed and the whole thing written in a certain style so that there is no chance of ambiguity. Fortunately all these papers have a summary at the beginning which contain the main findings of the research project. For the adventurous the method and sometimes the preamble before it can be of interest. The discussion section at the end and some of the tables and graphs in the results section may also be of interest. The text of the results section has a tendency to be horrendous (sometimes even to the seasoned reader !).
In order to give a indication of the ease of understanding the publications each item has been given a C (for complexity) rating, shown next to the title :
C1 : Easy to read, not too much technical understanding required
C2 : Style of writing more of a stilted scientific nature and more technical terminology.
C3 : Scientific paper of indigestible prose, containing large amount of technically demanding material. For the non-scientific the summary may be enough to get the gist of the paper.
Please don't be put off reading the articles. There is reading material for all ranges of interest and technical know-how. You will probably find that by reading some of the C1 rated items that they will help you to move on to C2 rated. If you don't know at what level to start; well just dip in!
|
For the Statistically Curious : All medical research papers will contain statistics. These are proper mathematical statistics, not the sort used by politicians, which are more often than not just raw data. Most doctors have a basic understanding of statistics but the real meaty stuff is usually done by a qualified statistician. There are a couple of statistical terms which might be helpful to the statistically curious and adventurous.
Odds Ratio: This term means the ratio of some thing occurring in a particular group under study compared to a standard control group. E.g. In the recent paper published concerning pregnancy outcome in the wives of male veterans and female veterans (71 & 72) the odds ratio for miscarriage for the study group was 1.4. This means that women in the study group are 1.4 times as likely to miscarry.
p Value: This is a measure of significance. If the results of a study show a significant difference between two or more groups then the p Value must be less than 0.05 (p<0.05). It is strongly recommended that you don't ask how the p Value is arrived at because that is where the mathematical fun really starts.
